2026 pricing guide · South Africa
How much does a website cost in South Africa?
Real 2026 numbers: what freelancers and agencies charge, what it costs every month afterwards, the hidden fees, and how to compare quotes without getting burned.
The short answer
A custom website for a small South African business usually costs R15 000 to R60 000 in 2026, depending on who builds it. A fair price for a small service business is roughly R15 000–R30 000. Template sites can cost under R10 000, and larger custom builds from mid-size agencies run from R40 000 to R150 000 or more. Budget another R150 to R5 000 a month to keep it running.
Website prices by who builds it
The biggest driver of price isn't the number of pages. It's who you hire and how much of the work they do for you. Growth Pulse Media's 2026 pricing guide gives these typical ranges:
| Who builds it | Typical price (once-off) |
|---|---|
| Junior freelancer | R5 000 – R20 000 |
| Experienced freelancer | R15 000 – R45 000 |
| Small boutique agency | R20 000 – R60 000 |
| Mid-size agency | R40 000 – R150 000 |
| Enterprise agency | R100 000+ |

What a survey of 56 South African web designers found
SME Rocket compared publicly listed prices from 56 South African web design companies. Because many of those are entry-level or template packages, the averages are lower than custom-build prices:
- 1-page website: average R3 765
- 5-page website: average about R6 634 (the range ran from R1 000 to R56 350)
- Ecommerce website: average R8 445
- Hourly rate: average R500 an hour
- By city: a 5-page site averaged R11 561 in Cape Town versus R7 607 in Johannesburg

The takeaway: a R5 000 quote and a R40 000 quote are usually not for the same thing. The gap is in custom design, copywriting, SEO, speed and who you call when something breaks.
Why website prices vary so much
- Template vs custom design. A theme with your logo on it is quick to set up. A layout designed around your customers takes days of work, and it's what makes you look established rather than generic.
- Who writes the words. Many cheap quotes assume you'll supply all the text and photos. Good conversion copywriting is often the difference between a site that looks nice and one that brings in enquiries.
- SEO and speed. Basic SEO means a page title. Proper SEO means fast load times on mobile, local SEO, a Google Business Profile, structured data and content people actually search for.
- Online store features. Products, payment gateways, shipping, stock and order emails add real setup time. Loading 50 products properly is work in itself.
- Integrations. Online booking, WhatsApp, CRMs, email marketing and multiple languages all add scope.
- Ownership and support. Some providers keep your domain, hosting or code, which makes leaving expensive. Others hand everything over and include a support period.
What a website costs every month
The build is a once-off cost; running the site is not. Typical ongoing costs in South Africa:
- Hosting: averages around R107 a month (SME Rocket survey). Premium managed hosting costs more.
- Maintenance packages: the survey found a range of about R150 to R4 000 a month, averaging roughly R400.
- All-in running costs including hosting, maintenance, email and updates: about R1 500 to R5 000 a month for a managed WordPress-style site, according to Growth Pulse Media.
Hand-coded static sites have no database or plugins to update, so they're usually cheaper and safer to run than plugin-heavy sites.
Hidden costs to ask about before you sign
- Domain registration and yearly renewal, and whose name it's registered in
- Hosting after the first year (introductory prices often jump)
- Premium themes, plugins or page-builder licences that renew annually
- Business email accounts
- For online stores: platform subscriptions and payment-gateway fees per transaction
- Charges for changes after launch, often billed hourly
How to compare website quotes
Put every quote side by side and check these before looking at the total:
- Do you see a design before paying? Or is a deposit due up front?
- Is the price fixed, in writing? Or estimated, with hourly extras?
- Who writes the content?
- Is SEO included, and what exactly does that mean?
- How fast will it load on a phone? Ask for a Google PageSpeed score.
- Can you edit it yourself without breaking the design?
- Do you own the domain, code and content outright?
- What's the launch date, and what happens if it's missed?
- What does it cost every month after launch, all in?
